Ankle Q & A

Why does my ankle hurt?

Ankle injuries are most often the result of trauma and overuse. Rolling your ankle or high-impact activities, like running, can put increased pressure on the joints, muscles, and ligaments of your ankles and may lead to injury. If you’re concerned about the possibility of an ankle injury, Dr. Saad can examine your ankle and determine if you’re at risk of an overuse injury, like tendinitis or muscle strains.

What are the signs of an ankle injury?

Ankle injuries have specific symptoms that can point to damage to the bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments in your ankles. These symptoms include:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Decreased range of motion or stiffness
  • Inability to bear weight or limping
  • Difficulty pointing or flexing your toes
  • Pain or tenderness to touch

While mild sprains can cause some of these symptoms, more serious injuries to the ankle are likely to cause all of these symptoms at once.

What causes ankle pain?

Various conditions related to trauma and overuse can cause ankle pain, including:

  • Fractures
  • Medial and lateral ankle sprains
  • High ankle sprains
  • Ligament tears
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Stress fractures

Arthritis may also develop from repetitive movements of your ankle and foot. Conditions like plantar fasciitis and bone spurs can also cause pain to spread from the sole of your foot to your ankle or may limit your ankle range of motion.

How is ankle pain diagnosed?

Ankle pain is diagnosed following a thorough consultation and physical exam from Dr. Saad. He begins by examining your ankle, foot, and lower leg for signs of tenderness, swelling, and bruising.

Dr. Saad uses different orthopedic tests to assess the structures in your ankle and their level of function, which is especially important if you’re having difficulty putting weight on your foot due to ankle pain. X-rays, an ultrasound, or an MRI may also be recommended to visualize exactly where your injury is located.

How is ankle pain treated?

Based on your diagnosis, Dr. Saad recommends an appropriate treatment plan to address your symptoms and return your ankle to normal. He may recommend any of the following treatments, depending on your needs:

  • Athletic taping, splinting, or casting
  • Ice
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Surgery

In order to recover fully after surgery, Dr. Saad works with local physical therapists to provide effective rehab during your recovery.
